The Kerem Tunnel allows for a unique hiking and riding experience.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital.
The tunnel links Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. נווה פריצקי Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.
On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists participated in a ceremony to inaugurate the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.
“In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive city for tourists because of its rich history. Today, apart from its historical treasures it also has modern-day tourism.” Elkin said. “The launch of the tunnel is another aspect of the expansion of Jerusalem as a city. Jerusalem and its transformation into a dazzling tourist city for all types of visitors throughout Israel and throughout the world.”
Elkin who, through his ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds to millions of shekels per year in the development all aspects Jerusalem’s tourism and the development and operation of exciting tourist attractions, ventures, and activities that link the rich history of Jerusalem’s eternal city to the future”. The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer its main sewer line towards Sorek’s purification plant.
