נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel is the first bicycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around Jerusalem, the capital city.
The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance within Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.
The tunnel’s official opening ceremony that is 2.1 kilometers long, was held in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) along with hundreds of cyclists.
Jerusalem was a popular tourist destination because of its rich historical. Elkin said that apart from its historic treasures and modern amenities, tourism has also been incorporated into the Jerusalem city. “The inauguration of this tunnel project [is] another element of the development of Jerusalem. It makes Jerusalem an attractive tourist destination for all types of audience in Israel and around the world.”
נווה פריצקי Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the improvement of Jerusalem’s tourism in all its aspects and also in the development of exciting activities and ventures that connect the rich history of our capital city’s eternal past to the future of Jerusalem… I would like to invite cyclists to visit and enjoy a modern and well-maintained cycling route that offers a view of the unique landscape of Old Jerusalem.”
The project was financed by the Elkin’s department and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
