The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique ride and hiking experience that should be loved by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest cycle tunnel, is constructed as a part of the 42-kilometer cycle route which is a loop around the capital. The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance can be located in Nahal Ein Kerem. The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated in a ceremony on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was a sought-after tourist destination due to its glorious historical. Elkin said that apart from its rich history and modern amenities, tourism has also been included in the Jerusalem city. “The opening (of the tunnel) is a further step in the expansion of Jerusalem and the transformation of Jerusalem into a popular city to visit for all kinds of audiences throughout Israel as well as around the world.”

Elkin who is in charge of the project in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests millions of dollars in the city’s tourism growth and the development of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that connect the glorious past of Jerusalem to its future. I encourage cyclists to take advantage of a a well-maintained, modern cycle route, which overlooks the stunning scenery of Old Jerusalem.

נווה פריצקי Elkin’s Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million for the project. The project was executed by the Jerusalem Development Authority. Elkin stated the fact that “The Kerem Tunnel Project is the central instrument to achieve the goal to transform the concept of transportation throughout Jerusalem.” Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. It will also be paved throughout its different areas. It will also encourage cycling and promote green transport in Jerusalem. The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate the main sewer line toward Sorek’s purification plant.

Construction of roads, installation, blowers, sophisticated security systems and electrical wiring are all part of the ongoing construction. The tunnel is safe for the public to use throughout the season.

The Kerem Tunnel gives you access to numerous recreation sites, including Ein Kerem Neighborhood, the Biblical Zoo and Aquarium, as well as historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh or Ein Laban.
