נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital city.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. It is located in southern Israel in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists participated in a ceremony to mark the opening of the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Elkin his ministry, which spearheaded the project along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the city’s tourism development and also in the creation of new attractions and ventures which will link the amazing historic past with the the future of Jerusalem. I invite cycling enthusiasts to come and enjoy a modern and well-maintained cycling route that overlooks the special landscape of Old Jerusalem.”

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 to move the main sewer from Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is west of Sorek and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel.

The current works include road construction, the installation of blowers as well as modern electrical and safety systems, to ensure the tunnel is safe for pedestrians to travel through throughout the year.

The Kerem Tunnel gives you access to a variety of recreation sites, including Ein Kerem Neighborhood, the Biblical Zoo and Aquarium as well as historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh or Ein Laban.
