The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of the 42-kilometer cycle route which circles the capital.

Elkin’s Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.
Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool for achieving the vision to change the way of thinking and transport in Jerusalem. “The new tunnel connecting to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing bicycle paths and those that will paved in the neighborhoods. It’s designed to promote biking within the city’s residents and to promote the green movement in the capital.”
The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the late 1990s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek, which is located just west of the city. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel. It also houses the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, installation of blowers and advanced safety and electrical systems to ensure the tunnel is safe for the public to pass through throughout the year.
