The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem, the capital city.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened during a celebration on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.
Jerusalem was once a major tourist attraction because of its rich history. Elkin stated that, in addition to its historical treasures the modern tourist industry is integrated into Jerusalem’s city. “The inauguration [of] this tunnel project is another step in the development of Jerusalem as an ideal tourist destination for all kinds of travelers throughout Israel and all over the world.”
Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism and in the creation of new activities and ventures that connect the rich history of our eternal capital to the future of Jerusalem… I would like to invite cyclists to take a relaxing and modernized route that will take the cyclist through Old Jerusalem.
Elkin’s Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million to the project. The work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin stated, “The Kerem Tunnel project will be a central instrument in achieving our goal to change the notion of transportation in Jerusalem.” “The tunnel is set to connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path. The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The current works include road construction, the installation of blowers and advanced security and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for the public to pass through at all times of the year.
