The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest bicycle tunnel, has been inaugurated as part of an extensive cycle path that is a loop around the capital.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Elkin’s Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million to the project. The project was executed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

“The Kerem Tunnel project is the central instrument for achieving the idea to transform the idea of transportation in Jerusalem,” Elkin emphasized. “The new tunnel, which is connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect with existing cycle paths within the city and are being constructed in its various areas. The tunnel is intended to encourage bicycling within its inhabitants, and also to encourage the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem.”

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer the main sewer line toward the Sorek purification plant.

Construction of roads, the installation and testing of safety and electrical systems are some of the ongoing efforts to ensure that the tunnel is secure for all seasons.

The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to unique recreation sites – including the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium, along with the historic natural springs of Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
