The Kerem Tunnel is a great location to go on a hike or ride.
The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital.
The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. The tunnel’s southern entry point can be found in Refaim Park below Ein Laban. While the northern entrance can be found in Nahal Ein Kerem about half one kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

Jerusalem was once very popular tourist destination because of its rich history. נווה פריצקי Elkin stated that, in addition to its historic treasures and modern amenities, tourism has also been integrated into the city of Jerusalem. “The opening (of [this] tunnel project is another aspect of the expansion of Jerusalem and it’s transformation into a sought-after tourist city for all sorts of visitors across Israel as well as around the world.”
Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the improvement of Jerusalem’s tourism in all its aspects and in the creation of innovative attractions and ventures that connect the fascinating history of our capital city’s eternal past to its future… I encourage all cyclists to visit and enjoy the modern, well-maintained route which overlooks Old Jerusalem.
The project was funded by the Elkin’s Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

It’s designed to encourage bicycle riding within its inhabitants, and also to encourage an environmentally sustainable transportation system in Jerusalem.”
The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer its main sewer line towards the Sorek purification plant.

The current works include road construction, installation of blowers, as well as advanced security and electrical systems to ensure the tunnel is safe for pedestrians to travel through at all times of the year.
