In the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem’s capital, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.
The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. נווה פריצקי The southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban, and the northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a kilometer close to the Kerem junction.
The tunnel’s official opening ceremony, which is 2.1 kilometers long was held in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman) and hundreds more cyclists.
“In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive city for tourists due to its glorious past. Today, apart from its historical treasures it also has modern-day tourism.” Elkin said. “The inauguration of this tunnel project [is] another element of the development of Jerusalem. It makes Jerusalem an attractive tourist destination for every kind of person throughout Israel, and worldwide.”
Elkin, whose ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, stated that the Jerusalem Municipality’s ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year to develop all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism and the design and operation of exciting attractions, ventures and attractions that connect the glorious history of our eternal city to its future”. Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project was a important tool to realize the goal of altering the way of transportation throughout Jerusalem. “The tunnel, which is being constructed to connect to Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing bicycle paths and ones that are paved in its neighborhoods. The goal is to encourage biking among its residents and promote the green transport revolution in Jerusalem.”
The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer its main sewer line towards the Sorek purification plant.
