The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s first bike tunnel, opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycling route surrounds Jerusalem.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened at a formal ceremony held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

The project was funded by the Elkin’s Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was completed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the goal to alter the concept and transportation throughout Jerusalem. Elkin said that the new tunnel is connected with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in the year 1990 to relocate the main sewer from Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is west of Sorek and is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel.
