The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel in Israel and was inaugurated as a part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital.

Inauguration of the tunnel that is 2.1 kilometers long was held in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman) along with hundreds of cyclists.

Elkin his ministry, which together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that the ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism and also in the development of innovative activities and ventures that connect the fascinating history of our eternal capital to the future of Jerusalem… I invite cycling enthusiasts to visit and enjoy a modern and well-maintained cycling route that takes in the unique scenery of Old Jerusalem.”
The project was funded by the Elkin’s Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. Elkin stated the fact that “The Kerem Tunnel Project is the central instrument to achieve the vision to change the way we think about transportation throughout Jerusalem.” Elkin stated that the new tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike trails. The tunnel will also be paved in its various areas. This will increase cycling and encourage green transport in Jerusalem.
The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the 1990s to move the main sewer line from the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek, which is located to the west of the city. It is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel that also includes the fifth water line to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
