The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital city.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a major tourist attraction due to its rich past. Elkin said that the present tourism industry is an integral part of Jerusalem’s treasures from the past and incorporates modern day tourism. “The launch of the tunnel project is yet another milestone in the advancement of Jerusalem as an ideal tourist destination for all kinds of travelers from Israel and all over the world.”

The works currently underway include road construction, installation of blowers and advanced safety and electrical systems to make the tunnel safe for people to walk through all year round.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo , as also the historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
