The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel was opened in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital city.
The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.
The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated during a celebration on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.
Jerusalem was once a major tourist attraction due to its rich history. The work currently in progress includes road construction, installation of blowers, as well as advanced safety and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for people to walk through throughout the year.
