The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest bicycle tunnel, has been opened as part the 42-kilometer cycle route which runs through the capital.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance within Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

The opening ceremony of the tunnel which measures 2.1 kilometers long, was held in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) and hundreds more cyclists.

Elkin added that in addition to its historic treasures and modern amenities, tourism has also been included in the city of Jerusalem. “The launch of the tunnel is another aspect of the growth of Jerusalem. Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that the ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year to develop Jerusalem’s tourism in all its aspects and in the creation of new activities and ventures that connect the glorious historical past of our eternal capital to its future… I encourage the cycling community to take a relaxing and modern route that takes the cyclist through Old Jerusalem.

Elkin’s Ministry Elkin’s Ministry Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. נווה פריצקי The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the work.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being utilized as an infrastructure tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

Road construction, installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are just a few of the ongoing works to make the tunnel safer for all year.
