The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel is now open in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds the capital city.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially inaugurated by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. It was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company chairman, as well as thousands of cyclists.

The project was funded by the Elkin’s Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin stated, “The Kerem Tunnel project is a key instrument for realizing our vision to change the concept transportation throughout Jerusalem.” Elkin stated that the new tunnel connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. In the late 1990s, in the 1990s, Kerem Tunnel was excavated to relocate the main sewer line from Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel and also houses the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
