The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest cycle tunnel, was constructed as a part of a 42-kilometer cycle route that runs through the capital. The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. נווה פריצקי Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban while the northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a mile close to the Kerem junction.

נווה פריצקי The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated during a celebration held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a popular tourist destination because of its historical past. The ministry of Elkin, which also headed the project alongside Jerusalem Municipality, declared that his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism industry and is involved in developing innovative attractions and ventures, which connect the glorious historic history of our capital city with its future.” I encourage cyclists to visit and enjoy the modern and well-maintained cycle route that takes in the unique nature of Old Jerusalem.”

Around NIS 25 million was earmarked in the project, financed by Elkin’s ministry, the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool for achieving the vision to change the way of thinking and transportation throughout Jerusalem. Elkin stated that the new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike trails. It will also be made paved in its various neighborhoods. This will increase cycling and encourage green transportation in the capital.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer its main sewer line to the Sorek purification plant.

The works currently underway include road construction, the installation of blowers, as well as advanced electrical and safety systems, in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for the public to pass through all year round.
