The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around Jerusalem, the capital city.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated in a ceremony on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Elkin who’s ministry spearheaded the project along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry has invested hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of Jerusalem’s tourism and also in the creation of new activities and ventures that connect the stunning historic past with the the future of Jerusalem. I would like to invite cyclists everywhere to visit and enjoy the modern, well-maintained route that overlooks Old Jerusalem.
About NIS 25 million was earmarked in the project, budgeted by the Elkin’s Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, and the work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
