The tunnel runs through the Nahal-Refaim-Emek-Motza route. The southern entrance is within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Kerem junction.
The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was officially opened on Thursday by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze’ev Elkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon the chairman of Gihon, and hundreds other cyclists were also present.

Elkin, whose ministry was spearheaded the project along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry has invested hundreds of millions of shekels annually in Jerusalem’s tourist development and in the development of new attractions and ventures that connect the stunning historic past with the the future of Jerusalem. The project was funded by Elkin’s ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

In the late 1990s, the Kerem Tunnel was excavated to move the main sewer line from Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now utilized for infrastructure purposes and is also home to the fifth water line to Jerusalem by the Mekorot water company.

Road construction, installation and testing of safety and electrical systems are just some of the ongoing works to ensure the tunnel is safe throughout the year.
